The fastest way to get strangers to understand and believe our values is to state them.
Or at least list them on our career site, preferably in bold with a sentence descriptive explanation below it.
Or maybe you post a 60-second video in which cheerful employees state the values and how great they are.
Or maybe you use them in hashtags on your social posts #Customers.
Or at least put them on $12 posters and hang them all over your office.
Or maybe we can all agree how weird that all is.
Why? Because values are things we believe, thoughts in our heads. They can’t be captured or proven. We can state them all we want, but saying them means as much as your average celebrity apology video/tweet: we know what the PR team wanted you to hear, but little about what they thought and felt.
So if we care about a company’s values, how do we communicate them?
Actions.
Values exist to help us make decisions. Because we believe something, we decide to X instead of Y. Values manifest themselves as actions and behaviors.
Say you care about women all you want, but are you offering anything more than the legal minimum family leave?
Make a video about diversity, but what’s your C-suite look like?
That poster says you care about your people, so why are the reviews talking so much about burnout?
If you want to take advantage of your values, don’t talk about them, show how they change your actions.
