CULTURE CHANGE
๐ Want a meaningful employer brand? Change the culture. Not the culture of your company, but the culture of job seekers. Think bigger. Stand for something. Stop whitewashing over the cracks in your hiring process and instead, draw on them with a highlighter and loudly state that your own candidates shouldnโt have to stand for that. Is it harder? Yup. But if you arenโt attempting to change the world, you should be.
BRAND V. ADVERTISING
๐ One of employer brandโs biggest failings is that (as an industry) weโve allowed ourselves and our work to be measured using the wrong yardstick. We are dinged for poor conversion, poor attraction, poor engagement, and poor clickthrough rates. Umโฆ those arenโt brand metrics, those are advertising and direct marketing metrics. So what should we measured on??? So glad you asked.
BAD STRATEGY
๐๏ธ Three things that make people suck at strategy. I love the first myth, which suggests that we should be defining the โrightโ strategy. One, there is no such thing as a right strategy. And two, simply having a proper strategy puts you ahead of your competition.
ROCK STARS?
๐ Why do only athletes get shoe deals? Do you know who uses shoes a LOT?! Nurses. So Saucony gave student nurses a NIL shoe deal like the kind a Heisman-winning quarterback might get. Imagine if you treated your staff like real rock stars and athletes. (Hat tip Will Jeffreys)

๐ Ways ChatGPT can help you get a job (via Wired, soooโฆ grain of salt here). What makes me a little sad is the section on using it to translate the job posting into something useful. I meanโฆ I get it. No one likes job postings. No one. And yet, we keep writing crap that requires billions of processing hours to turn into something a job seeker might be able to recognize as human language (oh, the irony!).
LEADERSHIP AND MAYBE COMMUNICATION
๐๏ธ Why point out that your boss has no clue? Not to be mean (and as a boss once, I saw myself in this), but to suggest that NONE of the bosses have a clue. This is an absolute vivisection of one leader in particular, but I will call it up every time I see an article about another CEO saying how important it is that we all get back to the officeโฆ
REAL HUMAN FACES, CHEAP!
๐ I have a real problem with the fact that employer brand is the champion of the human side of the brand, yet we get all sorts of objections when we try to use actual people in our branding work. But as the โcreator economyโ chugs along, maybe we can start to take advantage of the fact that if creators can be brands, why canโt we make our people the brand?
