James, love what you're saying here. These virtues are clarifying. I like your recommendations for opportunism and restlessness. On the inclusivity part, I wonder how you'd respond to a criticism like, "Not seeing color or gender or religion sounds like a kind of cultural blindness." Do you think that sort of, um, neutrality is valuable? Or do you think there might be some value in seeing the particulars of different identities? Thanks for your work!

It's a great question.

Let me start that I am not a DEI expert in any way, shape or form. And yes, there is absolute value is seeing color, gender et al, as a "monotone" group leads to sloppy thinking. That is, there is business value in thinking about attracting a wide spectrum of people.

But given the world we live in today, just saying that is a political statement, which absolutely sucks.

So I focused on trying to attract a wide variety of experiences, passions, and creativity. To me, the value a (for example) young Latina brings to the table of old white dudes isn't that she's a different color or gender or age. It's that she's experienced things old white dudes never would, and would have perceived those experiences differently that old white dudes. That's the value.

Was it a hedge in this age of... well, look around? Yes. But I suspect we saying the same thing from different points.
